Commentary: The Misconception of AI Sentience and Its Implications

Recent surveys in the US have revealed a worrying trend: a significant portion of the population believes that artificial intelligence (AI) is already sentient. This misconception is more than a simple misunderstanding—it poses serious risks to how we integrate and rely on AI technologies.



Survey Insights

The Sentience Institute's survey, conducted between 2021 and 2023, asked 3500 people about their perceptions of AI. The findings were surprising:

  • In 2023, 20% of respondents believed AI systems are sentient.

  • 30% thought Artificial General Intelligences (AGIs) capable of performing any task a human can are already in existence.

  • 10% believed that ChatGPT, launched in late 2022, is sentient.


The Reality Check

Despite these beliefs, AI remains far from being sentient. Modern AI systems, no matter how advanced, operate based on data and algorithms without consciousness or self-awareness. They can perform complex tasks and even mimic human-like responses, but they do not possess true understanding or emotions.


The Role of Avatars and Chatbot Naming

One contributing factor to this misconception is the anthropomorphizing (my absolute favourite word in the english language - anthropomorphizing ) of AI through avatars and personalized names. Companies like Replika, which offers bespoke avatars for its chatbots, have seen users frequently mistake these AIs for sentient beings. Users often send hundreds of messages daily to these chatbots, building relationships and sometimes believing in their sentience. This anthropomorphism can blur the line between engaging user experience and the actual capabilities of AI​.


The Dangers of Misplaced Trust

Believing AI is sentient can lead to dangerous levels of trust in its judgments, especially in critical areas like government and law enforcement. If we think AI can understand and make decisions like a human, we might over-rely on it and neglect necessary human oversight. This could have serious consequences, given AI's current limitations.


Media and Corporate Hype

Tech companies and media play significant roles in shaping public perception. Companies have a vested interest in promoting their AI products as revolutionary, sometimes overstating their capabilities. Media coverage often amplifies these claims, leading to sensationalized stories about AI's potential threats and abilities. This combination of corporate hype and media sensationalism feeds into public misunderstanding​.


Rethinking AI

To mitigate these risks, we need to shift our perspective on AI. The term "artificial intelligence" itself might be misleading, as it suggests a level of cognitive ability that AI does not possess. Recognizing AI for what it is—advanced, task-specific technology—can help us set realistic expectations and use it more effectively.

Education is key to addressing the public's misconceptions about AI. By understanding that AI is not sentient, we can better navigate its capabilities and limitations, ensuring it is used responsibly. Avatars and personalized names for chatbots should be designed to enhance user experience without misleading users about the nature of AI. Clear communication and realistic portrayals of AI's abilities will help build a more informed and cautious approach to integrating AI into society.
