Retail is an important component of the New Zealand economy, comprising 7.5% of NZ’s GDP and employing 19% of New Zealand’s workforce.

Whilst supermarket and grocery (20.4%), motor vehicle (15%), automotive fuels (8%) and department stores (6.1%) comprise almost half of retailing in New Zealand, the remaining 50% is distributed across a large number of sub-industries.
